(at a nail salon in downtown Santa Barbara just before the Old Spanish Days parade)
Grandmother (white, WASPy, trendy) to little boy: Look at those girls. Aren't they pretty? (referring to little girls dressed in "traditional Spanish dress")
Little boy (super blonde, big blue eyes): No.
Grandmother: Of course they are! They're so pretty.
Little boy: No they're not. The boys are pretty.
Grandmother, laughing: Boys aren't pretty! Boys are handsome. Girls are pretty. You're so silly.
In my head: Sometimes boys think other boys are pretty. You're gonna have fun figuring that out about your grandson for the next 10-20 years.
I kind of love seeing gay little kids whose parents/guardians don't know that they're gay. It's a little bit hilarious.
